The Environment Agency has urged the public to remain alert to ongoing flood risks following Storm Chandra and subsequent heavy rainfall. Unsettled weather is expected to continue across the country, with a Met Office yellow rain warning currently in place for parts of South West England. Heavy rain is forecast to persist over the weekend, increasing the potential for further flooding.
Teams from the Environment Agency have deployed pumps across the Somerset Levels and Moors to reduce the impacts of flooding and stabilise water levels. Local staff are actively engaging with residents to provide information and support, while water levels remain high in Dorset and Wiltshire. The agency continues to work closely with councils, water companies, and emergency responders, urging people to avoid driving through floodwater due to the danger it poses.
Environment Agency crews are also checking flood defences, clearing river blockages, and monitoring river levels nationwide. Their efforts have helped protect approximately 16,200 properties, while at least 300 properties have already been affected by flooding. These numbers are continually being updated as teams verify conditions on the ground.
Groundwater flooding remains a particular concern in Dorset, Wiltshire, and Hampshire, with minor impacts expected in West Sussex over the coming days. Significant river flooding is possible in Northamptonshire today, and while the Somerset Levels are not expected to experience major river flooding, minor impacts may persist over the next five days. Residents are cautioned that just 30cm of flowing water is enough to move a car, making driving through floodwater extremely hazardous.
Floods Minister Emma Hardy emphasised that the government is closely monitoring the situation and working with the Environment Agency, local authorities, and emergency services to protect communities. In a long-term effort to reduce flood risk, the government has committed £10.5 billion to protect 900,000 properties by 2036, alongside over £100 million for the maintenance of existing flood defences.
Residents and businesses are encouraged to stay informed by signing up for flood warnings via text, phone, or email and can contact Floodline on 0345 988 1188 for immediate guidance. The Environment Agency continues to assess and respond to conditions as rainfall eases, noting that rivers, moors, and levels may respond slowly and cause prolonged disruption.
