Google has announced a comprehensive set of partnerships, product updates, and funding initiatives to promote responsible AI-powered learning in India. The announcement comes in response to research showing that 74% of Indians believe AI can improve student outcomes. Key highlights include an ₹85 crore (nearly $10 million) Google.org grant to Wadhwani AI to support 75 million students, a memorandum of understanding with the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship to launch India’s first AI-enabled state university at Chaudhary Charan Singh University, Meerut, and the introduction of JEE Main practice tests within Gemini, based on content from PhysicsWallah and Careers360.
The initiative also introduces new AI learning features in Search and Google Classroom, including tools for building study guides, interactive quizzes, and educator tools to foster engaging and personalized learning. Early results from a randomized control study by Google DeepMind with the City Montessori School in Lucknow and Fab AI showed that students primarily used AI-guided learning to develop deeper conceptual understanding rather than seeking immediate answers. These findings support Google’s focus on teacher-centric AI integration designed to enhance learning outcomes responsibly.
Government and education leaders have expressed strong support for the initiative. Preeti Lobana, VP and Country Manager of Google India, emphasized combining human teaching with research-backed AI principles to ensure equitable learning opportunities across languages and regions. Chris Phillips, VP of Education at Google, highlighted India’s strong adoption of multimodal and multilingual AI learning tools, while Jayant Chaudhary, Minister of State for MSDE and MoE, stressed the importance of equipping educators with AI tools and modern frameworks to prepare students for the AI-driven workforce.
Institutional partnerships are central to the initiative’s strategy. The collaboration between Google, MSDE, and Chaudhary Charan Singh University aims to establish a national framework for modernizing higher education, particularly for regional institutions. Insights from this AI-enabled university pilot will guide the scaling of Cloud and AI technologies across colleges nationwide, bridging the gap between major metropolitan centers and regional campuses.
Google.org’s ₹85 crore grant to Wadhwani AI will modernize government-run education platforms like SWAYAM and the POSHAN Tracker. The project will provide support for students at every stage, including AI-driven voice tools to improve reading fluency in ten Indian languages and AI-powered English language coaching to enhance employability. By December 2027, the initiative is expected to impact 75 million students.
Students now have access to new AI tools, including full-length JEE Main practice tests in Gemini and AI Mode in Search. These tools provide immediate feedback on strengths and weaknesses, while AI Mode in Search also enables the creation of study guides and interactive quizzes through the Canvas tool. For educators, Google Classroom now integrates AI-powered feedback, insights, and automation tools to enhance lesson planning and engagement.
To maintain authenticity and security in learning, Google has deployed SynthID digital watermarking, enabling users to verify the authenticity of AI-generated or edited images and videos in Gemini. This ensures a safer and more reliable learning environment for both students and educators.
India has emerged as a global leader in AI-powered learning adoption. Students use features like Guided Learning, quizzes, flashcards, and study guides extensively, while teachers leverage Google Classroom to build lesson plans and risk assessments. Google has made its AI products, including Gemini, NotebookLM, AI Mode in Search, and Google Classroom, accessible in multiple Indian languages, promoting inclusivity and broad adoption across the country.
