Four months after Tropical Storm Erin battered the islands of São Vicente and Santo Antão in Cape Verde, communities continue to recover from the devastating floods that destroyed homes, infrastructure, and livelihoods. While visible signs of the disaster have faded, many families still face the long-term challenges of rebuilding their lives.
In response, the Cape Verde Red Cross, supported by the IFRC, quickly mobilized hundreds of volunteers and emergency resources, providing food, health support, hygiene promotion, and essential household items to over 1,000 families.
As the response shifts from emergency relief to recovery, efforts are focused on restoring livelihoods and community infrastructure. Cash assistance has been delivered to hundreds of households to help restart businesses and meet basic needs, while local residents participate in rehabilitating water supply systems through cash-for-work programs, strengthening both resilience and ownership.
Sustained support from donors and partners remains crucial to ensure that vulnerable communities can rebuild safely and sustainably, while enhancing early warning and preparedness systems for future disasters.
