The Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) is now accepting applications for its Agricultural Growth, Research, and Innovation (AGRI) Urban Agriculture Grants. This year, the program offers two distinct opportunities: the AGRI Urban Agriculture Youth Education Grant, which supports projects that establish or expand agriculture-based education programs for youth, and the AGRI Urban Agriculture Community and Economic Development Grant, designed to strengthen communities or boost economic vitality through urban agriculture initiatives.
MDA Commissioner Thom Petersen emphasized that urban agriculture fosters connections around food, learning, and opportunity. He highlighted that the grants are an investment in youth education, workforce development, community partnerships, and the long-term strength of Minnesota’s agricultural sector. Grant funds may be used for equipment purchases, physical improvements, curriculum development, transportation for youth farm visits, and other eligible project expenses.
Applications for both grant opportunities are due by 4 p.m. on Thursday, February 26, 2026, and must include a letter of support demonstrating community backing for the proposed project. A competitive review process will allocate up to $1.93 million in total funding, with individual grants ranging from $5,000 to $75,000 and requiring a minimum 25% cash match.
To help applicants, the MDA will host a virtual information session on Thursday, January 15, at 2:00 p.m., covering grant program details, eligible expenses, reporting and reimbursement requirements, and the application process. The session will include a Q&A and will be recorded for later viewing on the Urban Agriculture Grant webpage.
Funding for the AGRI Urban Agriculture Grants is provided through the MDA’s AGRI Program, which supports farmers, agribusinesses, schools, and other stakeholders across Minnesota to advance the state’s agricultural and renewable energy sectors.
