The United Nations Joint Project “Business Partnerships & Solutions for SDGs,” funded by the Government of Sweden, builds on an earlier phase to strengthen the role of Albania’s private sector in advancing sustainable development. By combining capacity building, awareness raising, trade facilitation, and policy support, the project seeks to create an enabling environment for businesses to align with the Sustainable Development Goals. Its overarching objective is to increase the number of Albanian enterprises adopting sustainable practices that generate positive social, economic, and environmental impacts while supporting inclusive and resilient economic growth, with a particular focus on the agri-business and textile, clothing, leather, and footwear sectors.
A central component of the project is the integration of sustainability into the UNDP Growing Your Business methodology, which provides MSMEs with a structured approach to diagnosing business performance, identifying priority challenges, and designing practical growth solutions. By embedding sustainability into business analysis, MSMEs are encouraged to assess not only financial performance but also energy and water use, waste management, environmental footprint, and long-term business viability. The resulting training curriculum focuses on environmental sustainability and circular economy principles, drawing on extensive fieldwork, company diagnostics, and consultations to ensure relevance to the real challenges faced by agri-food MSMEs in Albania.
The curriculum equips MSMEs and consultants with practical knowledge, tools, and examples to systematically identify sustainability gaps and opportunities. It supports businesses in transitioning toward greener, more competitive, and more resilient models that align with the SDGs, EU accession requirements, and evolving market expectations. By linking sustainability to cost reduction, operational efficiency, compliance, and competitiveness, the curriculum demonstrates how responsible practices can become a strategic advantage rather than an added burden.
Overall, the training framework is designed to build the confidence, technical capacity, and collaborative mindset needed for MSMEs to integrate sustainability into daily operations and long-term planning. Through actionable guidance, hands-on tools, and a clear progression from understanding to implementation, the curriculum empowers businesses and development actors to drive sustainable growth, strengthen resilience, and contribute to a future-ready agri-food processing sector in Albania.
