The European Union has launched an emergency air bridge to deliver life-saving humanitarian aid into Darfur, Sudan, where mass atrocities, starvation, and displacement have left millions in urgent need. The operation involves a total of eight flights, with the first flight delivering around 100 tonnes of supplies from EU humanitarian stockpiles and partner organizations on 12 December 2025. Additional flights are scheduled throughout December 2025 and January 2026.
The humanitarian situation in Darfur has sharply deteriorated following the fall of El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur, to the Rapid Support Forces in late October. This event escalated an already catastrophic crisis and further restricted access for aid organizations, leaving civilians vulnerable and prompting widespread reports of violations of international humanitarian law.
The air bridge is transporting essential supplies, including shelter materials, water, sanitation and hygiene items, and health supplies, with a total operation value of €3.5 million funded by the EU’s humanitarian aid budget.
This initiative is part of the EU’s broader support to Sudan, which has amounted to over €270 million in humanitarian assistance in 2025 alone, making the bloc one of the largest contributors to the Sudanese crisis and its biggest humanitarian operation in Africa.
