The Sustainable Agricultural Supply Chain Initiative (SASI) highlighted the tangible impact of cooperation with the private sector during a Partner Day with Bayer, demonstrating how private funding and technical expertise can be leveraged to advance sustainable agriculture. The exchange underscored SASI’s approach of aligning development objectives with private sector engagement to deliver measurable results in agricultural sustainability.
During a recent meeting, representatives from SASI and Bayer AG explored potential intersections and opportunities for collaboration in sustainable agriculture. The discussion focused on fostering a professional exchange, combining complementary roles, and identifying areas where joint efforts could strengthen long-term agricultural resilience and innovation.
Bayer AG, a global life science company active in 83 countries, plays a leading role in the agricultural sector through Bayer Crop Science. Both organizations agreed that the complex challenges facing agriculture cannot be addressed by individual actors alone and require close cooperation between public and private sector stakeholders to future-proof agricultural systems.
SASI shared its experience of implementing sustainable agricultural projects worldwide in partnership with more than 250 companies, mobilizing over €75 million in private funding. These efforts have already reached more than eight million people and contributed to more sustainable farming practices across over 1.8 million hectares of land, demonstrating that strategically integrated private investment can generate significant development impact.
Bayer outlined its work in sustainable agriculture through initiatives such as the Better Life Farming Alliance, which supports smallholder farmers by improving access to inputs, training, and innovation. Active across Africa and Asia, Bayer develops products and digital solutions to boost productivity and income while reducing crop stress, with a strong focus on making agriculture more attractive to younger generations. The meeting concluded with agreement to further assess how SASI’s development expertise and Bayer’s technical capabilities could be combined to advance shared sustainability goals in agriculture.
