High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk, addressing the Geneva-based Human Rights Council, warned that the human rights situation in Venezuela has continued to deteriorate since his last update in June. He highlighted an intensifying crackdown on civic space, which is severely restricting people’s freedoms. Arbitrary detentions and enforced disappearances remain prevalent, while social and economic hardships are worsening for the population.
Türk also raised concerns about recently adopted legislation that grants the Venezuelan government expanded emergency powers in response to perceived external threats. However, the full text of the law has not been published, limiting transparency and shielding authorities from public scrutiny.
