Romanian farmers will benefit from enhanced financing options through a €25 million loan provided to Agricover Credit IFN SA by the European Investment Bank (EIB). The funds are targeted at micro agricultural businesses seeking to boost productivity and adopt environmentally sustainable practices. This initiative aims to improve access to finance in a sector that is vital to Romania’s economy, employing over 20% of the country’s workforce and contributing around 4% to its GDP. The financing will particularly support young farmers and facilitate the adoption of innovations, benefiting local communities and the environment.
EIB Vice-President Ioannis Tsakiris emphasized that the partnership with Agricover Credit reinforces the EU’s commitment to strengthening Romania’s agricultural sector. By providing resources to micro-enterprises, the loan will help farmers, especially younger ones, enhance productivity and resilience in a sector critical for both national and European prosperity. Agricover Credit, Romania’s leading non-bank financial institution lending exclusively to farmers, will direct the funds to wheat, dairy, and livestock producers among other beneficiaries.
Agricover Credit Director General Serhan Hacisuleyman noted that the loan will empower farmers to adopt modern technologies and transform Romanian agriculture. The initiative promotes sustainable business practices, technological innovation, and social equity. Alongside the financing, Agricover will also benefit from the EIB’s Social Inclusive Finance Technical Assistance (SIFTA) under the InvestEU Advisory Hub, which supports the renewal of the Code of Good Conduct for Microcredit Provision and strengthens the portfolio targeting small farmers.
The loan is part of broader EU and EIB efforts to support agriculture and cohesion regions, leveraging private and public funds to achieve sustainable recovery and climate goals. InvestEU provides long-term funding to mobilize private investment in alignment with EU priorities, including the European Green Deal and digital transition. Agricover, part of the Agricover Group, offers tailored financing and innovative solutions to Romanian farmers, supporting operational, investment, and sustainability needs while contributing to the modernization of the country’s agricultural sector.
