A new five-year strategic partnership between the Gates Foundation and the Qatar Fund for Development has been launched with a commitment of US$500 million to expand access to health services, climate-resilient agriculture, and education across Africa, South Asia, and Southeast Asia. Announced during the Doha Forum, the initiative aims to accelerate progress for mothers, children, and young people in regions facing the greatest development challenges. The agreement was formalized in the presence of senior Qatari leadership and Bill Gates.
Bill Gates emphasized that solving global health and development challenges requires practical innovation and strong partnerships that ensure new solutions reach those most in need. The collaboration is intended to bring effective tools to families to help them build healthier and more productive lives.
The partnership also focuses on strengthening major multilateral health platforms, including Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, and the Lives and Livelihoods Fund. According to QFFD Director General Fahad Hamad Al-Sulaiti, the initiative reflects Qatar’s commitment to scalable, sustainable financing, using instruments such as concessional loans, equity, guarantees, and innovative transaction structures to mobilize meaningful impact.
This new agreement builds on a history of joint work between the Gates Foundation and QFFD, including the Nanmo initiative launched in 2022 to support climate-adaptive agriculture for smallholder farmers in sub-Saharan Africa and the Doha Global South Health Policy Initiative, which brings together public health leaders to advance policy solutions for low- and middle-income countries. The expanded funding will further strengthen catalytic climate-resilient projects such as aquaculture development in Kenya and initiatives that boost food security and create livelihoods for smallholder farmers.
The Gates Foundation continues its mission to help people live healthy and productive lives through innovative solutions and global partnerships. QFFD, as Qatar’s official international development institution, remains focused on empowering communities through investments in education, health, economic opportunity, and resilience across more than 100 countries, using a diversified and scalable financing toolkit.
