Bangladesh has taken a significant step toward shaping its national approach to responsible artificial intelligence with the launch of the AI Readiness Assessment Methodology (RAM) Report. This initiative, led by the ICT Division with support from UNESCO, UNDP, a2i, and funding from the European Union, provides a comprehensive assessment of the country’s preparedness to adopt AI in ways that protect rights, promote inclusion, and strengthen public institutions. The report is the result of months of consultations with government agencies, technical experts, academia, private-sector organizations, and civil society.
Unveiled in Dhaka, the report highlights the priorities necessary to ensure AI strengthens public institutions without replacing human judgment and safeguards citizens rather than exploiting them. Mr. Faiz Ahmad Taiyeb, Special Assistant to the Hon’ble Chief Adviser, described the RAM as a crucial tool for understanding Bangladesh’s current AI readiness and guiding future policy decisions.
UNESCO Representative Dr. Susan Vize emphasized that the RAM provides a practical foundation for evidence-based decision-making, ensuring that AI development in Bangladesh aligns with human rights, dignity, and sustainability. UNDP Bangladesh Resident Representative Stefan Liller highlighted the development implications, noting that the impact of AI on inequality will depend on current choices regarding connectivity, skills, infrastructure, governance, and tailored national strategies.
The European Union, which funded the RAM exercise, welcomed Bangladesh’s commitment to building an ethical and inclusive AI ecosystem. Mr. Michal Kreja of the EU Delegation stressed the importance of creating trusted AI systems that benefit all citizens, including youth, women, and marginalized communities.
The AI RAM Report is intended to guide Bangladesh’s long-term planning as the country finalizes its National AI Policy and strengthens digital governance frameworks. The assessment process aligns with the UNESCO Recommendation on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence and reflects Bangladesh’s broader commitment to using AI for public good, transparency, and national development priorities.
UNESCO, UNDP, a2i, and the European Union reaffirmed their commitment to supporting Bangladesh in developing policies, skills, and institutional safeguards necessary for responsible AI adoption.
