The Kingdom of Morocco has made a landmark pledge of US$5 million to Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, marking its first-ever contribution and the largest commitment from a North African nation. This donation will support Gavi’s next strategic period, 2026–2030, reinforcing Morocco’s growing role in global health security, African vaccine manufacturing, and African-led development.
The pledge reflects the royal vision of His Majesty King Mohammed VI to empower Africa through resilience, co-development, and regional solidarity. Morocco’s commitment also underscores its long-standing dedication to South–South cooperation and its emerging position as a bridge between Africa and the global community on health and sustainable development.
“Guided by the vision of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, Morocco is proud to join Gavi as a donor for the first time,” said Amine Tehraoui, Minister of Health and Social Protection. “Investing in vaccines is an investment in Africa’s future stability and prosperity. Every child deserves life-saving protection and opportunity.”
H.E. Nadia Fettah Alaoui, Minister of Economy and Finance, added that the contribution reflects Morocco’s commitment to equitable and sustainable access to vaccination, particularly for vulnerable populations.
Gavi CEO Dr. Sania Nishtar welcomed Morocco’s leadership, highlighting that 80% of Gavi’s resources in its next strategic period will focus on Africa. She praised Morocco’s vision for continental vaccine manufacturing, setting a benchmark for other nations.
The pledge comes as Gavi prepares to launch its ‘Gavi 6.0’ strategic period, aiming to protect 500 million children globally between 2026 and 2030, with Africa at the center of its efforts. Immunisation remains one of the most cost-effective public health interventions, saving millions of lives annually and delivering high economic returns.
Through initiatives like Gavi Leap, the alliance is transforming its model to promote country ownership, collaboration, and alignment with national development priorities. Morocco’s contribution exemplifies how regional leadership can translate foreign policy into tangible support for global immunisation, positioning the country as a producer, innovator, and leader in health security.
