The Australian Parliament has passed the Communications Legislation Amendment (Australian Content Requirement for Subscription Video On Demand Services) Bill, introducing new rules for streaming platforms. Streaming services with over one million Australian subscribers are now required to invest at least 10% of their total program expenditure for Australia—or 7.5% of their revenue—into producing new local drama, children’s, documentary, arts, and educational content.
The legislation also provides the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) with a $50 million funding boost over three years from 2026–27, aimed at supporting the production of new Australian children’s and drama programs. These measures are designed to ensure that Australians have consistent access to local content across all streaming services while supporting the country’s creative industries and arts workers.
This initiative fulfills a commitment under Australia’s National Cultural Policy, Revive, establishing local content requirements for subscription video-on-demand services and reinforcing the production and promotion of quality Australian stories.
