The Minns Labor Government has introduced a $5 million grant program aimed at supporting community energy groups and not-for-profit organisations to help more households reduce energy costs, adopt renewable technologies, and access government rebates and incentives. The Community Energy Activation Program will provide funding of up to $600,000 to eligible organisations, enabling them to expand local energy initiatives and deliver tailored support to communities.
These community groups already play a vital role in educating residents and driving energy-efficient practices. The new grants will allow them to scale up existing programs or develop new initiatives designed to meet the specific needs of their communities. Funding can support activities such as community workshops, personalised guidance sessions, adaptation of existing energy education programs, development of digital tools and resources, dedicated staff roles, marketing and communication efforts, and other innovative approaches to engage households.
The initiative is part of the Minns Labor Government’s Consumer Energy Strategy, which focuses on placing people and communities at the centre of the energy transition. Community energy groups and not-for-profit organisations supporting NSW household energy consumers are eligible to apply, with applications closing at 5 pm on Monday, 16 February 2026. An online webinar for interested applicants is scheduled for 11 am on Tuesday, 9 December.
Minister for Climate Change and Energy, Penny Sharpe, highlighted the importance of trusted local networks in helping households switch to smarter, more efficient energy solutions. She emphasised that the program will provide residents with credible, free guidance, ensuring more households can benefit from renewable energy and energy-saving measures.
