The World Bank has approved a US$150 million project in Neuquén province aimed at improving infrastructure, promoting sustainable tourism, and strengthening regional economic development. The initiative, titled “Resilient Infrastructure for Regional Economic Development and Job Creation,” is expected to benefit around one million residents and visitors, particularly nearly 300,000 people in Pehuén, Southern Lakes, and Upper Neuquén. Governor Rolando Figueroa highlighted the role of infrastructure and tourism as key drivers of provincial growth, emphasizing the World Bank as a reliable partner to enhance these sectors.
The project prioritizes enhancing connectivity through the paving of key routes, fostering better binational integration with Chile, and investing in priority tourist destinations by upgrading infrastructure and basic services. It also aims to strengthen institutional capacities for tourism development, providing support for local entrepreneurs, women, and youth. Disaster risk management, with a focus on wildfire prevention and response, is another critical component of the initiative.
In particular, the project emphasizes women’s inclusion in quality employment through technical and professional training, as well as support for women-led enterprises. Fire management measures include improved data systems, early warning systems, prevention and risk reduction actions, and specialized firefighting equipment, including aircraft.
The financing structure includes a sovereign-guaranteed loan to the province of Neuquén, repayable over 32 years with a 7-year grace period, and a variable interest spread. Through these integrated efforts, the project aims to create sustainable jobs, foster economic growth, and improve quality of life for residents while boosting Neuquén’s tourism potential.
