Deputy Spokesperson Farhan Haq emphasized the urgent need to turn recent diplomatic progress into tangible actions on the ground in Gaza. While the UN does not play a formal role in finalizing the Board of Peace, chaired by President Trump, or in the planned stabilization force, it remains committed to fulfilling the responsibilities assigned to it under the relevant UN resolution.
The UN’s role focuses on scaling up humanitarian assistance for civilians affected by over two years of conflict between Hamas and Israeli forces, while supporting initiatives to advance the ceasefire and transition efforts. The UN Security Council recently endorsed the US peace plan and the proposal for a temporary international force in Gaza, with a 13-0 vote and abstentions from Russia and China. Secretary-General António Guterres described the resolution as a critical step toward consolidating the ceasefire and moving toward a political process for a two-State solution in line with previous UN resolutions.
On the ground, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) continues to provide essential life-saving support, including shelter and basic supplies. Tent distribution, tarpaulins, and other items are being delivered to families affected by the conflict. The UN has fast-tracked $18 million from the occupied Palestinian territory Humanitarian Fund to strengthen these efforts as winter approaches, addressing worsening living conditions caused by heavy rains.
This funding has enabled partners to advance more than 30 projects across sectors including food and nutrition, water, health, shelter, protection, and other essential services. Health service provision in Gaza has also expanded, with the number of operational service points rising to 219 as of Sunday, compared with fewer than 200 in October, reflecting ongoing efforts to meet urgent humanitarian needs.
