This year marks the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War, and the British High Commission in Malaysia held a Remembrance Day Service to honour service personnel and civilians who served in both World Wars and other armed conflicts. The event brought together ambassadors, high commissioners, defence attachés, representatives from the Malaysian Armed Forces, veterans’ associations, local societies, and schools to pay tribute to their courage and sacrifice.
The service began with a performance by The International School @ Park City, setting a reflective tone for the ceremony. British High Commissioner Ajay Sharma CMG highlighted the importance of Remembrance Day as a moment to pause and reflect on the bravery of those who served, the resilience of communities, and the enduring pursuit of peace. He emphasized the need to stand together in gratitude, learn from history, and reaffirm a shared commitment to a peaceful future.
Throughout the ceremony, participants engaged in readings and performances that honoured the fallen, including renditions of ‘In Flanders Fields’, Rupert Brooke’s ‘The Soldier’, Wilfred Owen’s ‘Dulce et Decorum Est’, and Robert Laurence Binyon’s ‘For the Fallen’. These readings were delivered by distinguished guests, including Maj Gen (Rtd.) Dato’ Zulkiflee bin Mazlan, Lt Col (Rtd.) Raymond Goh, and Colonel James Green OBE.
The ceremony concluded with two minutes of silence observed in respect of the fallen heroes, followed by the traditional laying of wreaths at the base of the Cross, a solemn tribute to those who gave their lives in the pursuit of peace. Remembrance Day is commemorated annually on the second Sunday of November, serving as a time to honour sacrifice and reflect on the lessons of history.
