At the COP30 climate conference in Belém, Brazil, countries from the Amazon region launched the Alliance for Sustainable, Resilient, and Integrated Transport in the Amazon, a major initiative supported by the Inter-American Development Bank Group (IDB Group) and the World Bank Group. The alliance seeks to strengthen regional connectivity and transform transportation systems in the Amazon through sustainable, inclusive, and resilient approaches. The launch event was held at the IDB Group Pavilion, where ministers of transport from Amazonian nations and senior representatives from both financial institutions signed a declaration committing to this collaborative effort involving both public and private sector stakeholders.
The new Alliance will focus on developing a Regional Action Plan 2026–2030, which will serve as a roadmap for advancing efficient transportation networks and promoting regional integration. It complements key regional initiatives, including the IDB Group’s Amazonia Forever program and South Connection program, as well as the World Bank Group’s Amazonia Viva initiative, all of which aim to promote sustainable infrastructure and livable communities across the Amazon.
During the launch, participants highlighted the urgent need to strengthen regional connectivity and reduce inequalities in access to essential services. They noted that limited infrastructure, reliance on fossil fuels, and vulnerability to natural disasters continue to hinder sustainable development and integration in the Amazon region.
The Alliance will operate under four strategic pillars: improving connectivity and access to services in isolated communities, promoting efficient multimodal logistics to boost the regional bioeconomy, developing resilient infrastructure through nature-based solutions, and strengthening river transport as a key mode of mobility and integration. Together, these efforts aim to create a transport model that connects communities, enhances service efficiency, and builds resilience against the impacts of climate change.
The IDB Group’s presence at COP30 includes more than 80 events showcasing solutions to close financing gaps for resilient and sustainable development in Latin America and the Caribbean. Acting as a bridge between governments, investors, and communities, the IDB Group aims to mobilize at least $6 billion in new commitments aligned with national priorities.
The Amazonia Forever program serves as a regional platform to protect biodiversity and accelerate sustainable development through innovative financing, knowledge sharing, and coordination among the eight countries that share the Amazon. The IDB Group, comprising the IDB, IDB Invest, and IDB Lab, continues to lead as a key source of financing and expertise for improving lives across Latin America and the Caribbean.
