The UK government has announced an additional £5 million in urgent humanitarian funding to support people in Sudan, particularly in El Fasher, where 260,000 individuals, including many children, are trapped in famine-like conditions amid ongoing violence. The funding will provide essential services such as emergency food supplies, medical care, and protection for survivors of sexual violence, with £2 million specifically allocated to support victims of rape and sexual violence.
Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper highlighted the severity of the crisis, condemning the atrocities, mass executions, and the use of rape as a weapon of war by both the Rapid Support Forces and Sudanese Armed Forces. She emphasized that, while previous humanitarian efforts have been significant, including £120 million already provided this year, the crisis in Sudan has long been neglected, and urgent action is needed.
The UK’s additional funding will be delivered through partners such as the International Committee of the Red Cross, the Sudan Humanitarian Fund, and the Cash Consortium Sudan. UK diplomats are also actively engaged in international efforts to hold perpetrators accountable, push for a cessation of hostilities, ensure protection for civilians, and facilitate unhindered humanitarian access, while supporting renewed efforts to achieve peace in Sudan.
