The UK Government has announced £17.3 million in new funding to boost Aberdeen’s Energy Transition Zone (ETZ), marking a major step toward advancing clean energy innovation in North East Scotland. The investment, confirmed by Scottish Secretary Douglas Alexander during his visit to Aberdeen, will help develop a renewables business hub adjacent to the recently upgraded Aberdeen South Harbour. The area is being transformed by ETZ Ltd, a not-for-profit, private sector-led organisation driving the region’s shift toward renewable energy.
The funding will accelerate the development of the Energy Transition Zone, which aims to create, grow, and co-locate clean energy companies that can benefit from the harbour’s deepwater infrastructure and offshore wind capabilities. Once completed, the ETZ is expected to attract inward investment, strengthen the renewables supply chain, and position Aberdeen as a key player in offshore renewable energy delivery.
This new funding reaffirms the UK Government’s commitment to expanding clean energy initiatives, supporting skilled job creation, and helping lower energy costs. The project had been announced previously but was never delivered, making this allocation a significant milestone in advancing Aberdeen’s renewable ambitions.
ETZ Ltd Chief Executive Maggie McGinlay welcomed the funding, emphasising the importance of collaboration between government and industry to maintain the North East as a global energy hub. She noted that the support will enable an accelerated programme of activity, helping the region become one of Europe’s most attractive destinations for low-carbon technology investment.
The UK Government has already invested £9.7 million in ETZ projects, including £5 million for the Innovation Campus and the new Energy Transition Skills Hub, which features training facilities in advanced manufacturing, digital technologies, and welding. During his visit, Secretary Alexander met with energy suppliers, attended a roundtable with Great British Energy, toured the Floating Offshore Wind Innovation Centre, and visited Aberdeen South Harbour to witness progress firsthand.
