The UK Government has announced £4.5 million in funding to provide veterans and their families with safe and secure homes. The funds will be distributed among 19 housing providers across the country to build 45 new homes and make vital refurbishments to existing properties. This initiative is part of the Government’s wider £20 million Capital Housing investment, reinforcing its commitment to ensuring that those who served the nation have access to quality housing and community facilities.
The announcement was made by Minister for Veterans and People, Louise Sandher-Jones MP, at The Stoll Foundation’s Kings Road Park development in Fulham, where she opened Valour House — a new facility offering long-term accommodation for veterans and their families. The additional funding will also support shared facility enhancements within Valour House, helping to foster a supportive community for residents.
Through the Veterans Capital Housing Fund, grants are being awarded to organizations across all UK nations and regions, with nine receiving major grants totaling over £3.9 million and ten others receiving additional top-up grants worth more than £500,000. The fund supports the construction of new homes and the refurbishment of existing ones — replacing roofs, boilers, and windows, and improving accessibility for veterans with disabilities. So far, over £12.5 million in grants have been distributed, directly benefiting thousands of veterans and their loved ones.
The new announcement precedes the upcoming Defence Housing Strategy, which aims to provide greater homeownership opportunities for veterans and service personnel, including ‘first-dibs’ priority access to homes built on surplus Ministry of Defence land. Minister Sandher-Jones emphasized that every veteran deserves a safe and secure home, reaffirming the government’s pledge to deliver “homes fit for our heroes.”
Will Campbell-Wroe, Chief Executive of the Stoll Foundation, welcomed the minister’s visit and highlighted the importance of providing affordable, high-quality housing for veterans and their families. In line with the Prime Minister’s 2024 commitment that “homes will be there for heroes,” the government has also extended the Op FORTITUDE and Reducing Veteran Homelessness programmes with an additional £3.5 million until March 2026. Since its inception, Op FORTITUDE has processed over 4,100 referrals and supported more than 1,000 veterans into housing, demonstrating continued progress in the mission to end veteran homelessness in the UK.
