The third EU-Bahrain Freedom of Religion and Belief (FoRB) Conference, titled “Freedom of Religion & Belief: The Practice of Promoting Coexistence,” was held in Brussels from 28 to 30 October 2025. This year’s conference built upon the success of the previous editions held in Manama in 2022 and 2023, further strengthening cooperation between the European Union and Bahrain on promoting interfaith dialogue and human rights.
Jointly organized by the European External Action Service, the European Commission under the EU-GCC Outreach Facility, and Bahrain’s King Hamad Global Centre for Coexistence and Tolerance, the event highlighted the shared commitment of both sides to advancing human rights, peaceful coexistence, and mutual understanding amid global challenges and shifting geopolitical realities.
In her opening remarks, EU Special Representative for Human Rights Kajsa Ollongren reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to promoting dialogue on freedom of religion and belief, stressing the continued global challenges faced by people who are discriminated against or persecuted because of their faith or beliefs.
Throughout the three-day conference, participants from Europe, Bahrain, and other Gulf countries engaged in discussions on the role of governments, civil society, and faith-based organizations in advancing freedom of religion and belief. The sessions focused on practical approaches to encourage coexistence and combat intolerance and discrimination.
The FoRB Conference series continues to serve as a vital platform connecting European and Middle Eastern perspectives on religious freedom and human rights. It is expected to expand its reach and adopt new formats in the coming years to further strengthen its impact and foster long-term dialogue and cooperation.
