The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) expressed deep sorrow and outrage over the killing of five volunteers from the Sudanese Red Crescent (SRC) in the city of Bara, North Kordofan, on October 27, 2025. The volunteers, who were part of a food distribution mission, were clearly identified by their Red Crescent vests and official identification cards, yet were attacked while performing their humanitarian duties. Three additional volunteers remain missing following the incident.
The IFRC strongly condemned the attack, calling it a grave violation of international humanitarian principles and reaffirming that assaults on humanitarian workers are completely unacceptable. The organization urged all parties to respect the Red Cross and Red Crescent emblems, which symbolize neutrality, protection, and humanitarian service.
Offering condolences to the victims’ families and colleagues, the IFRC highlighted the growing dangers faced by humanitarian workers. Since the start of the conflict in Sudan, the Sudanese Red Crescent has lost 21 staff members while on duty. Globally, 25 Red Cross and Red Crescent staff and volunteers have been killed so far in 2025, underscoring the urgent need to safeguard those providing life-saving aid in conflict zones.
