The Ontario government has announced up to $159,000 in provincial disaster recovery funding for the Township of Madawaska Valley to help cover emergency response costs and critical infrastructure repairs following severe flooding in August 2024. The funding is being provided through the Municipal Disaster Recovery Assistance (MDRA) program, part of the province’s broader plan to strengthen Ontario’s infrastructure and enhance community safety while supporting local workers.
Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing Rob Flack reaffirmed the government’s commitment to helping municipalities rebuild after natural disasters, noting that the MDRA program plays a key role in easing financial burdens and restoring essential infrastructure. The funds will support the repair of roads, culverts, and other critical assets damaged by the floods, ensuring residents’ safety and the municipality’s long-term resilience.
Billy Denault, Member of Provincial Parliament for Renfrew—Nipissing—Pembroke, emphasized the importance of provincial-municipal partnerships in addressing emergencies. He stated that the assistance will help the township rebuild for the future while maintaining fiscal stability.
Suzanne Klatt, CAO/Clerk of the Township of Madawaska Valley, expressed gratitude for the government’s timely support. She highlighted that the funding prevents a significant financial strain on the community, which would have otherwise faced a 3.8% increase in the municipal levy. Klatt underscored that collaboration between provincial and local governments is crucial in overcoming challenges and maintaining the well-being of rural communities.
