Beyond Grantmaking: A Foundation’s Journey to Transform Social Narratives

Dated: October 29, 2025

Metta Fund embarked on a bold strategic experiment two years ago: to invest in narrative and cultural transformation as a way to complement traditional grantmaking and advance equity for older adults. The organization recognized that the dominant narratives surrounding aging — particularly those depicting immigrant and caregiving communities — failed to reflect their strength, wisdom, and resilience. What began as a small step toward changing the public discourse on aging has now become central to the foundation’s approach, offering valuable lessons for other funders willing to pursue long-term, risk-taking strategies for social equity.

The fund’s shift toward narrative work stems from the understanding that storytelling is essential infrastructure for social cohesion and democracy. In an era when divisive narratives erode solidarity, stories of shared humanity and care help bridge divides and reinforce the principles of inclusion. For Metta Fund, reframing aging as a collective, dignified experience not only challenges ageist assumptions but also strengthens democratic participation by ensuring older adults are seen and heard in policy spaces that affect their lives.

Central to this work was the decision to elevate community voices directly. Partnering with Caring Across Generations and the Center for Cultural Power, Metta Fund supported When We Grow Older — a storytelling project highlighting Spanish-speaking and Afro-Latina caregivers in California. By collaborating with existing grantees, the fund leveraged trusted relationships to authentically amplify narratives rooted in lived experience.

Implementing this strategy required a cultural shift within the organization itself. The board had to embrace the understanding that narrative change is a long-term process that cannot be measured by short-term grant metrics. Instead, impact was tracked through engagement and community response. Staff capacity-building became essential, as narrative work demanded different skills from traditional philanthropy. As Metta Fund prepares for future phases, it continues adapting to political changes and learning how to better support an interconnected ecosystem of storytellers, strategists, and advocates.

At the core of Metta Fund’s model lies a commitment to relationships over campaigns. Long-term partnerships with artists and community groups have proven far more effective than time-bound messaging efforts. The creative process challenged the fund to be flexible with timelines and trust collaborative outcomes. Through initiatives like When We Grow Older, the fund has seen how narrative and policy efforts reinforce each other — stories give meaning to data and open pathways for systemic change.

The approach offers a replicable framework for other philanthropic institutions. Lasting narrative change, Metta Fund has learned, emerges through networks where artists, organizers, and cultural strategists collectively drive impact. Rather than leading the conversation, foundations can act as conveners and resource providers, fostering collaboration and removing barriers.

Ultimately, Metta Fund’s journey demonstrates that narrative work is not a peripheral activity but a cornerstone of democracy-building. By reshaping how society talks about aging, caregiving, and interdependence, the foundation contributes to a more inclusive and resilient civic culture. Though the work unfolds over generations, its transformative potential makes it one of the most powerful investments in social equity that philanthropy can make.
