The UK Government has announced that Welsh communities are reaping major benefits from substantial defence investment, which is generating thousands of skilled jobs across the nation. According to the latest UK Defence Footprint report, Wales received £1.1 billion in defence spending over the past year, directly supporting 3,900 industry jobs across a range of sectors. This equates to £340 in defence spending per person, underscoring the government’s commitment to regional economic growth through defence initiatives.
This funding is part of the UK Government’s historic plan to raise defence spending to 2.6% of GDP by 2027, with a goal of reaching 3% in the next Parliament. Beyond ensuring national security, the investment aims to fuel economic growth and create new opportunities across the UK. The government’s “Plan for Change” emphasizes defence as a key driver of prosperity and innovation in communities nationwide.
Secretary of State for Wales Jo Stevens highlighted that the defence industry plays a vital role in Wales’ economy, providing thousands of high-quality jobs in every region. She noted that all five of the Ministry of Defence’s largest suppliers have a presence in Wales, positioning the nation to benefit further from the rise in defence spending. Stevens emphasized that this investment will help boost economic growth, enhance national security, and increase incomes for Welsh families.
Minister for Defence Readiness and Industry Luke Pollard MP reaffirmed that the record uplift in defence investment will equip the armed forces with essential resources while driving economic benefits throughout the country. He added that by turning defence into an engine of growth, the government is supporting Welsh jobs, businesses, and communities.
Wales’ defence sector is increasingly recognized for its expertise in advanced manufacturing and cyber security, forming an integral part of the UK’s broader defence ecosystem. The country hosts key defence operations from Anglesey to Cardiff, including armoured vehicle production and drone manufacturing. These projects are not only advancing technological innovation but also reinforcing Wales’ reputation as a growing hub for defence research and development.
The impact of defence investment extends far beyond direct employment, creating a positive ripple effect across local supply chains and communities. By supporting a wide range of industries—from engineering to technology—the sector is fostering sustainable economic growth while providing stable, high-quality jobs that benefit families across Wales.
