Energy experts and decision-makers from South-Eastern Europe and the Mediterranean gathered in Vienna on 15–16 October for an OSCE Regional Workshop focused on building energy system resilience against future risks and extreme weather. The workshop supported participants with long-term climate projection data and practical anticipatory tools aimed at strengthening regional energy security.
The event brought together senior representatives from government, energy regulators, transmission system operators, hydrometeorological services, and academia, reinforcing the cross-sector collaboration required for climate-resilient planning. Participants gained hands-on knowledge on interpreting high-resolution downscaled climate data, including projections related to rising temperatures, drought conditions, precipitation intensity, and changes in heating and cooling demand.
The workshop also introduced the upcoming OSCE Energy Security Platform, an online decision-support tool designed to help energy and climate stakeholders better anticipate multidimensional risks and advance the energy transition. With increasing threats from heatwaves, droughts, floods, wildfires, and shifting resources, attendees stressed the importance of climate-informed strategies, improved operational resilience, and stronger regional cooperation.
This regional initiative is implemented by the OSCE Office of the Co-ordinator of Economic and Environmental Activities in partnership with Argonne National Laboratory, as part of a broader project to mitigate climate-related threats to the energy sector. The effort is financially supported by Austria, Germany, Italy, Poland, and the United States.
