Bosnia and Herzegovina has taken a significant step toward a greener and more energy-efficient future with the launch of the EU4EnergyEfficiency project. Funded by the European Union and jointly implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Czech Development Agency (CZDA), in cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Relations (MOFTER), the initiative aims to strengthen institutional capacities, reduce energy consumption in public buildings, and promote renewable energy use across the country.
Valued at over EUR 6 million, the project will support public institutions in investing in energy-efficient renovations and renewable energy solutions while introducing the Energy Service Company (ESCO) model to attract sustainable investments. The EU’s commitment to Bosnia and Herzegovina’s green transition is part of broader support of more than EUR 160 million in the country’s energy sector, aligning with EU energy and climate standards and the Growth Plan for the Western Balkans.
The project will train more than 200 public servants in practical energy-saving measures and engage citizens nationwide through public awareness campaigns. These efforts aim to demonstrate the benefits of energy efficiency in improving living standards and environmental protection. Ministry officials highlighted the project’s role in reducing energy consumption, increasing renewable energy use, and strengthening institutional capacities, emphasizing the importance of continued EU support and international cooperation.
The Czech Development Agency will provide technical expertise and share lessons from the Czech Republic’s own energy transition, while UNDP will leverage its experience in sustainable development to ensure practical, local solutions. Together, the partners aim to enhance energy management, improve public infrastructure, and contribute to a sustainable energy transition for Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Over the project’s duration, public calls will be announced for energy renovations of public buildings and ESCO projects, following transparent selection processes under the National Investment Framework. Upon completion, EU4EnergyEfficiency is expected to renovate over 27,000 m² of public space, save 1.8 million kWh annually, and reduce CO₂ emissions by more than 1,200 tons. The initiative exemplifies how EU support, international collaboration, and innovative financing can drive tangible progress toward a greener, more resilient, and inclusive energy future in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
