The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a $100 million concessional loan to help Uzbekistan improve the quality of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education in secondary schools. The Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics in Secondary Education Project aims to equip young people with modern, innovation-driven skills critical for sustainable and inclusive growth, supporting Uzbekistan’s ambition to reach upper middle-income status by 2030.
According to ADB Country Director for Uzbekistan Kanokpan Lao-Araya, the project underscores the country’s strong commitment to investing in human capital and empowering youth. By strengthening STEM education, Uzbekistan is preparing its next generation for a globally competitive and resilient future.
The initiative will upgrade learning environments in 200 secondary schools, transforming them into resource centers that will also serve surrounding schools. Improvements will include the installation of modern laboratories, information and communication technology (ICT) infrastructure, solar energy systems, and inclusive facilities for students with disabilities. In addition, the project will provide nationwide training for teachers in six STEM subjects and promote interdisciplinary STEM learning through educational technology. Special advocacy campaigns and career counseling programs will also be introduced to encourage girls to pursue STEM-related careers.
Aligned with Uzbekistan’s Development Strategy for 2022–2026, the project supports ADB’s Strategy 2030 priorities, including digital transformation, gender equality, and climate resilience. It also complements ADB’s broader initiatives in education and human capital development, such as upcoming investments in vocational training for the green economy.
The project coincides with the 30th anniversary of ADB’s partnership with Uzbekistan. Since joining ADB in 1995, Uzbekistan has received a total of $14.6 billion in public sector loans, grants, and technical assistance from the bank.
ADB remains a leading multilateral development institution dedicated to promoting inclusive, resilient, and sustainable growth across Asia and the Pacific. Through innovation, strategic partnerships, and investment in quality infrastructure, ADB continues to help member countries address complex challenges and build a prosperous, sustainable future.
