Ghana joined countries worldwide to commemorate World Food Day 2025 under the theme “Hand in Hand for Better Food and a Better Future.” The national celebration, held at the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA) in Accra, brought together government officials, development partners, farmers, civil society, and media to reflect on collective efforts toward building a more resilient and sustainable agrifood system. The event emphasized that achieving food security and improved nutrition for all requires sustained collaboration and shared responsibility among all stakeholders.
This year’s celebration held special significance as it coincided with the 80th Anniversary of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), marking eight decades of partnership and progress in the global fight against hunger and malnutrition. The event highlighted that unity and action remain central to overcoming challenges in agriculture, nutrition, and food systems.
Hon. Eric Opoku, Ghana’s Minister for Food and Agriculture, noted FAO’s steadfast partnership with MoFA in advancing food security and nutrition through initiatives in irrigation, post-harvest management, and livestock development. He emphasized that such collaborations are vital for strengthening Ghana’s agrifood systems and supporting farmers across the country.
Ms. Priya Gujadhur, FAO Representative in Ghana, reflected on the enduring importance of global cooperation, noting that the theme “Hand in Hand for Better Food and a Better Future” underscores the need for governments, farmers, youth, women, private sector actors, and development partners to work together to advance sustainable agrifood systems. She highlighted that the conviction of FAO’s founders—that hunger can be defeated through solidarity—continues to guide efforts in Ghana and worldwide.
UN Resident Coordinator in Ghana, Zia Choudhury, emphasized that food security goes beyond production; it requires ensuring safe, nutritious, and affordable food is accessible to everyone. He reaffirmed the United Nations’ commitment to supporting Ghana in building resilient agrifood systems that leave no one behind, creating a future where every child, woman, and farmer can thrive.
The 2025 World Food Day celebration in Ghana reaffirmed the country’s dedication to achieving food and nutrition security while showcasing the enduring partnerships that drive progress toward Zero Hunger, aligned with Sustainable Development Goal 2.
