The Government of Brazil has made a voluntary contribution of BRL 1,500,000 (approximately 244,000 Swiss Francs) to support WIPO-administered capacity-building activities. The funding aims to promote the use of intellectual property (IP) by innovators and creators across Latin America, the Caribbean, and Portuguese-speaking countries in Africa. Brazil’s donation is provided through a “funds-in-trust” arrangement, which operates separately from WIPO’s regular budget and supports specific work areas.
The agreement establishing this framework for enhanced IP capacity-building support was signed by WIPO Director General Daren Tang and Ambassador Guilherme de Aguiar Patriota. Director General Tang welcomed Brazil’s contribution, highlighting its leadership in promoting South-South cooperation and its direct benefits for innovators, creators, and entrepreneurs in the targeted regions. He also noted that the contribution builds on Brazil’s active and longstanding engagement with WIPO.
Ambassador Patriota emphasized Brazil’s commitment to international development cooperation, noting that innovation can drive sustainable development. He described the trilateral South-South technical cooperation agreement as a tool to ensure the IP system better serves developing nations, particularly populations that have not traditionally benefited from IP frameworks. The contribution aligns with WIPO’s Development Agenda and Brazil’s goal of making intellectual property a driver of inclusive growth.
The funding will be implemented over the next four years, with WIPO collaborating closely with national IP offices, regional organizations, and local partners to maximize the impact and sustainability of the supported programs.
