On the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) reaffirmed its commitment to eliminating poverty and promoting shared prosperity. The 2025 observance focuses on the theme, “Ending social and institutional maltreatment by ensuring respect and effective support for families,” emphasizing the importance of protecting the dignity of every family.
The latest Global Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI), published by UNDP in collaboration with the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative, highlights that nearly 80 percent of the world’s multidimensionally poor—887 million people—live in regions exposed to at least one major climate hazard, including extreme heat, drought, floods, or air pollution. Alarmingly, around 650 million people face two or more overlapping hazards, compounding the challenges of poverty.
This MPI underscores that poverty is multidimensional, extending beyond income to include limited access to essential services and vulnerability to climate risks and inequality. By focusing on how people experience poverty in their daily lives, the MPI provides crucial insight for shaping policies that protect families and strengthen communities. UNDP works with countries to build trusted institutions, provide social protection, deliver quality services, and support climate resilience.
Ending poverty in all its forms remains a defining global promise. Achieving it requires ensuring that every family can live with dignity, security, and the ability to shape its own future.
