The Government of Canada is investing in cultural spaces across the Atlantic region to strengthen communities, celebrate artistic talent, and enhance both the economy and Canadian identity. This week, the Honourable Ginette Petitpas Taylor, Member of Parliament for Moncton–Dieppe, announced funding exceeding $1.4 million for projects aimed at improving cultural infrastructure in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland and Labrador. The announcement was made on behalf of the Honourable Steven Guilbeault, Minister of Canadian Identity and Culture and Minister responsible for Official Languages.
The funding will support renovations, upgrades, and the acquisition of specialized equipment for arts and cultural venues, ensuring that artists and organizations have the tools and spaces they need to create, perform, and share their work. A notable recipient, the Capitol Theatre in Moncton, will receive $500,000 over two years to renovate its venue and upgrade its equipment. These improvements include roof and air unit replacements, drainage and surge protection updates, exterior repairs, and enhancements to lighting, sound, and performance facilities.
Through the Canada Cultural Spaces Fund, the government aims to preserve venues where communities gather to celebrate Canada’s heritage, diversity, and creativity. These investments are intended to foster cultural engagement, promote local talent, and build pride and connection within communities. Projects funded under the program not only enhance physical infrastructure but also support planning, feasibility studies, and other initiatives that strengthen the cultural, social, and economic fabric of the region.
The Capitol Theatre, one of the major presenting organizations in New Brunswick, showcases around 40 shows annually across multiple artistic disciplines, including performances by Indigenous and racialized artists, youth-focused productions, and bilingual shows. The funding will allow the theatre to maintain its role as a key cultural hub while ensuring safe, modern, and fully equipped facilities for performers and audiences alike.
