The Global Gateway initiative, More Sustainable Petén, is designed to support economic growth in Petén while ensuring the protection of the environment and the responsible use of natural resources. The program seeks to promote sustainable development in the region, balancing economic opportunities with ecological preservation.
Funded and implemented by Team Europe—which includes the European Union, Germany, Spain, France, Ireland, and Sweden—alongside the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the initiative leverages international expertise and resources to drive its objectives.
The program also collaborates with key Guatemalan institutions to ensure effective local implementation. Partners include the Ministry of Environment (MARN), the Ministry of Agriculture (MAGA), the National Council of Protected Areas (CONAP), the National Forest Institute (INAB), the Guatemalan Tourism Institute (INGUAT), and the National Institute of Public Administration (INAP), among other local organizations. This multi-level cooperation aims to foster sustainable development, environmental stewardship, and socioeconomic advancement in Petén.
