The United Kingdom, through the Start Fund Network, has provided £300,000 (approximately US$402,600) to support anticipatory flood response in Guatemala. The funding will be administered by CADENA, which will collaborate with vulnerable communities to prevent a potential humanitarian crisis. The initiative specifically targets communities in high-risk areas near rivers and regions prone to landslides and mudslides.
The Start Fund is a multi-donor pooled fund designed to provide rapid support for small and medium-scale humanitarian crises. It allows member NGOs to raise alerts and access funding within 72 hours, with interventions typically completed within 45 days. This fast-track mechanism ensures timely assistance to communities at risk.
The UK played a key role in establishing the Start Fund in 2014 and remains one of its principal donors. Other contributors include the German Federal Foreign Office, the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation, the IKEA Foundation, Ireland’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Jersey Overseas Aid, and the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, reflecting a global partnership approach to crisis response.
