Tánaiste Simon Harris welcomed the significant allocations in Budget 2026 aimed at supporting Irish citizens and enhancing Ireland’s presence and influence globally. The budget includes almost €10 million to open five new Embassies and Consulates under the Global Ireland 2025 Strategy, along with a €2.5 million allocation to support international market diversification. These measures are intended to strengthen Ireland’s diplomatic footprint and economic engagement in key global markets.
Budget 2026 also marks a record investment in Ireland’s humanitarian and development efforts, with the Official Development Assistance (ODA) budget rising by €30 million to a historic €840 million. This funding will bolster Ireland’s global aid programs, with targeted support for crisis-affected regions such as Gaza and Sudan, while continuing Ireland’s commitment to humanitarian, health, and educational initiatives worldwide.
The budget further enhances services for Irish citizens abroad. An additional €15 million is allocated to the Passport Service, alongside €1 million to the Emigrant Support Programme, which aligns with the Government’s new Diaspora Strategy. The Reconciliation Fund will also see increased investment, rising to €9.5 million, to support peacebuilding and community initiatives on the island of Ireland.
Minister of State for International Development and Diaspora, Neale Richmond, emphasized the importance of this record Irish Aid allocation in addressing global humanitarian crises, tackling child malnutrition, and providing essential services that improve long-term livelihoods. He also highlighted the government’s continued commitment to supporting Irish communities overseas through the Diaspora Strategy.
Minister of State for European Affairs and Defence, Thomas Byrne, noted that 2026 will be a pivotal year as Ireland assumes the EU Presidency. The budget provides an additional €1.3 million to support EU-focused programs, including citizen engagement initiatives and efforts on EU enlargement, underscoring Ireland’s commitment to promoting European unity and values.
