Concern Worldwide has expressed strong support for the increased allocation in Ireland’s Budget 2026 for official development assistance (ODA). The additional funding comes at a critical time when other countries are reducing their aid budgets, making Ireland’s commitment a significant gesture in global humanitarian support.
Dominic Crowley, CEO of Concern Worldwide, highlighted that Ireland’s continued investment sets an example within the EU, demonstrating a steadfast commitment to assisting those living in extreme poverty and vulnerable conditions. The Budget 2026 allocates €840 million for ODA, up from €810 million in 2025, reinforcing Ireland’s role as a global leader in development funding.
Globally, approximately 700 million people live in extreme poverty, with 40% of them in conflict-affected or fragile settings. This proportion is expected to rise to 60% by 2030. Concern emphasized that Ireland’s targeted ODA funding is crucial for addressing the needs of these populations.
Last year, in partnership with the Irish government through Irish Aid, Concern reached two million people across 21 countries. Crowley underlined that Ireland’s sustained focus on the world’s most vulnerable ensures that ODA funds are used effectively, supporting initiatives that make a tangible difference in reducing poverty and improving lives worldwide.
