A modern school in Sukhovolia village, Lviv Oblast, has been completed and will soon welcome 500 students and over 80 staff. The €3.85 million project, financed by the European Investment Bank (EIB) under the Ukraine Early Recovery Programme, is one of six educational facilities supported by the initiative in the region. The new building spans more than 8,000 m² and includes classrooms, workshops for crafts and technical subjects, a sports hall, an assembly hall, playgrounds, a football field, and landscaped green spaces.
The school’s kitchen and canteen were designed in line with Ukraine’s School Nutrition Reform, led by First Lady Olena Zelenska, to improve school meal quality, modernize infrastructure, strengthen local capacity, and foster healthy eating habits. EIB Vice-President Teresa Czerwińska highlighted that the project reflects a commitment to investing in Ukraine’s recovery and providing resilient infrastructure that directly benefits communities, particularly through access to essential nutrition during emergencies.
The Ukraine Early Recovery Programme, implemented jointly by the EU, EIB, Ministry for Development of Communities and Territories, Ministry of Finance, local authorities, and with UNDP technical support, forms part of broader efforts to restore essential infrastructure across the country. In Lviv Oblast alone, eight projects are complete or underway, including six schools and two hospitals, with a total investment of €15 million. Previous initiatives include the completion of St. Luke’s Hospital in Lviv and Preschool No. 7 Dzvinochok in Truskavets.
Local and national leaders emphasized the school’s significance for the community. Deputy Prime Minister Oleksii Kuleba noted that new projects under Ukraine Recovery Programme III will continue to rebuild schools, hospitals, water plants, and shelters. Community leaders Volodymyr Gutnyk and Maksym Kozytskyi praised the collaborative effort that made the school a reality, while UNDP Resident Representative Auke Lootsma highlighted the project’s role in providing stability, hope, and support for communities during wartime.
