The second Media and Digital Literacy Camp for youth began on September 26 at Jahorina, bringing together 17 participants from across Bosnia and Herzegovina. Over four days, attendees are engaged in interactive workshops and practical exercises designed to enhance their understanding of media, digital, and scientific literacy, with a special focus on fact-checking and artificial intelligence.
The camp’s program features lectures and workshops led by experts in communications, science, media, and digital literacy, emphasizing critical thinking, source credibility analysis, and the practical application of digital tools. Participants explore how to navigate the digital landscape responsibly and assess information critically, skills increasingly vital in today’s fast-evolving technological environment.
Ferdinand Koenig, Head of Communications and Spokesperson of the EU in BiH, highlighted that new technologies provide immense opportunities while also increasing risks of misinformation and manipulation. He stressed that media and digital literacy are essential skills for critically evaluating sources and sharing content responsibly, noting their growing importance as technology continues to evolve.
The camp features sessions led by experts including Associate Professor Dr. Lamija Silajdžić from the University of Sarajevo, science journalist Jelena Kalinić, Associate Professor Dr. Nasir Muftić from the Faculty of Law, and Marija Ćosić from the Raskrinkavanje platform. These sessions provide participants with insights into media literacy, scientific communication, law, and fact-checking techniques.
Emir Zulejhić, Program Coordinator at CA “Why Not,” emphasized the camp’s role in strengthening critical thinking and minimizing the influence of misinformation among youth. Participants gain skills to navigate the digital information space more effectively and responsibly.
Azra Mehmedović, one of the participants, expressed the value of the camp in helping her recognize accurate information and avoid disinformation, enabling her to provide verified information to peers through social media.
The Media and Digital Literacy Camp is organized under the European Union project “Raising Awareness and Knowledge of Media Literacy among Youth in BiH,” aiming to equip young people with essential skills for responsible digital engagement and informed participation in society.
