The Government of Canada has announced over $13 million in funding to 15 community-based organizations to improve access to sexual and reproductive health services across the country. Barriers such as limited provider knowledge, insufficient training and resources, stigma, discrimination, and geographic isolation often prevent Canadians from accessing these essential services. The funding, provided through the Sexual and Reproductive Health Fund, will support projects that develop resources for healthcare providers, conduct public awareness campaigns, and offer travel and logistical assistance for people seeking abortion care.
Since 2021, the fund has supported 36 projects aimed at ensuring Canadians can access safe and evidence-based sexual and reproductive health services. The government emphasizes its ongoing commitment to enhancing the availability, accessibility, and inclusivity of these services, promoting health equity and gender equality nationwide.
Leaders including Health Minister Marjorie Michel and Minister of Women and Gender Equality Rechie Valdez highlighted that this investment is a concrete step toward ensuring comprehensive, culturally safe care for all, particularly for women, 2SLGBTQI+ communities, Indigenous and racialized people, and youth. They underscored the importance of community-led initiatives in advancing bodily autonomy, human rights, and equitable access to healthcare.
Parliamentary Secretary Marie-Gabrielle Ménard and MP Eric St-Pierre emphasized that the funding strengthens the capacity of organizations delivering essential services, ensuring Canadians have reliable, safe, and inclusive care close to home. The initiative also reinforces the broader goal of building a more equitable health system and advancing gender equality throughout Canada.
The Sexual and Reproductive Health Fund was specifically created to support evidence-informed and innovative projects for populations at higher risk of poorer sexual and reproductive health outcomes, reflecting the government’s commitment to a healthier, stronger, and more inclusive Canada.
