Md. Mofazzol Haque is currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Social Work at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology. Alongside his studies, he works as a student journalist for Bangladesh Pratidin and The Daily Campus. With a strong background in media, he is particularly focused on the role of journalism in strengthening democracy in Bangladesh. His experiences in projects related to Quality Education and Gender Equality have deepened his understanding of how media, education, and community engagement intersect to build democratic processes. His work is driven by a passion for fostering informed and active communities through education and effective communication.
Coming from Sunamganj, one of the least developed districts in Bangladesh in terms of education and gender equality, he has personally experienced the challenges faced by students in disadvantaged regions. As a wetland area, Sunamganj’s development has lagged, leaving basic rights like education under-implemented. A lack of electricity, tutors, and parental support during his childhood made education difficult for him, but through perseverance, he managed to secure admission to university. These struggles inspired his belief that education and equality are essential for progress and for preparing communities for the demands of the modern world.
A survey conducted in three villages of Derai Upazila—Dhanpur, Chandipur, and Nachni—revealed alarming barriers to education. Around 60% of female students dropped out before completing secondary school, and 70% were married before the age of 18. Contributing factors included poverty, unskilled teachers, poor infrastructure, superstition, and a lack of awareness. These findings motivated Mofazzol to dedicate himself to addressing these systemic challenges.
Since 2022, he has been actively working to implement Sustainable Development Goals 4 and 5, focusing on Quality Education and Gender Equality. His initiatives involve running three schools: Dhanpur Government Primary School, the Government Speech and Hearing Impaired School, and Dhanpur Independent Ebtedayi Madrasa. Efforts include promoting equal education opportunities for boys and girls, building leadership skills, and raising awareness among parents. Through seminars, training sessions, and engaging activities such as quizzes, 157 students at Dhanpur Independent Ebtedayi Madrasa alone have benefited, with visible improvements in learning outcomes. Over the past three years, approximately 1,500 students have been directly supported, while 56 extremely poor students have received essential educational materials such as books and school bags.
Mofazzol’s initiative has gained recognition, being selected among the top 10 projects at the 11th International Youth Organization Conference and featured in a national Bangladeshi newspaper. Looking ahead, he envisions that within the next five years, around 500 students across the three schools will achieve significant progress in education and gender equality. He remains committed to ensuring that no student in his community is left behind, working toward a brighter and more prosperous future for all.
