Across Africa, countless children are struggling to survive under extremely harsh conditions in countries such as Ethiopia, Zambia, Sierra Leone, Uganda, Zimbabwe, Cameroon, and in refugee camps in Kenya. They lack the most basic necessities of life—food, clean water, and medicine—leaving them in a constant fight for survival.
Currently, more than 92 million children in Africa suffer from severe malnutrition, which makes them vulnerable to deadly diseases including malaria, tuberculosis, cholera, and meningitis. Many also face life-threatening respiratory infections that could be easily treated if not for their weakened immune systems and the lack of available resources.
For nearly four decades, Bread and Water for Africa® has been at the forefront of efforts to fight epidemics such as cholera, Ebola, and famine. The organization provides food, water, medicines, and medical supplies to clinics and orphanages, ensuring that local healthcare workers have the resources they need to save lives. Its mission extends beyond emergency aid, focusing on long-term support through education on hygiene and sanitation to create healthier living environments.
Through its dedicated partnerships and the generosity of its supporters, Bread and Water for Africa® has made significant progress in protecting orphaned and vulnerable children. The organization helps save lives with vaccines and medicines, treats infections, promotes sanitation, provides clean water, offers clothing and shelter, combats malnutrition with nutritious meals, and supports education and vocational training to break the cycle of poverty.
Despite these achievements, challenges remain. Rising commodity prices in Africa are making it increasingly difficult for orphan care partners to provide adequate nourishment for children. Continued support is critical to sustain life-saving programs and ensure that African communities can build healthier and brighter futures for their children.
