Mars UK has formally signed the Armed Forces Covenant (AFC), reaffirming its commitment to supporting members of the UK’s armed forces community, both past and present. The signing ceremony was attended by Lt Col Tom Spencer-Smith, Commanding Officer of the 1st Battalion Grenadier Guards, who acted as Defence’s co-signatory, alongside Mars UK representatives. Members of the company’s Armed Forces Network and reservists also witnessed the event, highlighting its significance within the organisation.
The Armed Forces Covenant represents a nationwide pledge to ensure that serving personnel, veterans, and their families are treated with fairness and respect across society. More than 13,000 employers have already signed the Covenant, recognising the skills, resilience, and leadership qualities that the military community contributes to civilian workplaces.
Luke Bellinger, Director of Strategic Sourcing at Mars and lead for Mars UK’s Military Associate Resource Group, emphasised that the signing reinforces Mars UK’s commitment to creating an inclusive workplace. He noted the company’s pride in providing opportunities where veterans, reservists, and military families can thrive professionally, benefiting from meaningful employment and career growth.
By signing the Covenant, Mars UK also commits to supporting its reservist employees by accommodating training schedules and mobilisation requirements. Reservists form a vital part of the UK’s defence, with around 30,000 trained individuals across the Royal Navy, British Army, and Royal Air Force—making up nearly 15% of the military’s strength.
The UK Government continues to encourage organisations to recognise the value of the armed forces community, with initiatives led by the Reserve Forces’ and Cadets’ Associations (RFCAs). Programmes such as the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme (ERS) further strengthen collaboration between employers and Defence, ensuring ongoing support for those who serve.
