A new £26,000 funding programme has been launched to inspire community projects that celebrate and develop the Manx language, the native tongue of the Isle of Man.
The initiative, announced by Culture Vannin as part of the Year of the Manx Language, invites creative, ambitious, and impactful proposals that can strengthen the language’s presence both on the island and internationally. Director Breesha Maddrell said the fund aims to “capture people’s imaginations” and place the Manx language “at the centre of things,” with no upper limit set for individual grants to give applicants unusual freedom in shaping their ideas.
Project proposals could range from concerts, workshops, recordings, and research to publications and educational resources. Applicants are encouraged to include online elements to maximise accessibility and reach. “We have always been quite stunned by the power of the community in creating something that is incredibly special, has impact and is really worthwhile,” Dr Maddrell said, highlighting the language’s deep influence on local place names, speech patterns, and even businesses.
The year-long celebration of Manx also marks 10 years of Biosphere Isle of Man and 35 years of Manx being taught in all schools. The programme is coordinated by Jeebin, the Manx Language Network, which works to increase access to the language.
Applications for grants are open until 31 October, with priority given to projects that promote a positive image of Manx, increase participation, inspire creativity, and create a lasting legacy.
