The Ontario government is providing up to $555,000 to support the Township of Strong and the Township of Joly in recovering from severe flooding that occurred in June 2024. The funding, delivered through the Municipal Disaster Recovery Assistance (MDRA) program, will help cover emergency response costs and critical infrastructure repairs, forming part of the province’s broader plan to strengthen local infrastructure, protect communities, and support jobs.
Associate Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing, Graydon Smith, emphasized the government’s commitment to supporting municipalities facing extensive damage from unexpected natural disasters, noting that the funding will help repair local infrastructure and enhance public safety. On June 23 and 24, 2024, heavy rainfall of up to 85 mm triggered sudden flooding in both townships, causing road washouts, damaged culverts, and temporary road closures.
Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing, Rob Flack, highlighted that the MDRA program eases the financial burden on municipalities by covering extraordinary emergency response costs and damage to essential property or infrastructure caused by natural disasters. The Township of Strong will receive up to $492,000, while the Township of Joly will receive up to $63,000, with eligible expenses including operating and capital costs beyond regular municipal budgets.
Local leaders expressed their gratitude for the support. Tim Bryson, Mayor of Strong, noted that the funding provides vital relief for rebuilding critical infrastructure and ensuring resident safety. Brian McCabe, Mayor of Joly, emphasized that the assistance not only helps repair flood damage but also reassures the community that the municipality is not alone in facing natural disasters.
