On 15 September, the World Trade Organization (WTO) marked a historic moment with the entry into force of the WTO Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies. This agreement aims to curb billions of dollars in annual subsidies that fuel overfishing and contribute to the depletion of marine resources, addressing one of the most pressing global environmental and trade challenges.
During a special General Council meeting, members highlighted the importance of this achievement, emphasizing its role in ensuring sustainable fisheries while protecting the livelihoods of millions who depend on them.
WTO Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala described the agreement as a “landmark for global trade governance,” praising member states for their commitment. She stressed that the deal illustrates how trade can be harnessed to serve both people and the planet, advancing sustainability alongside economic development.
