ILO to Release Landmark Report on Digitalization, AI, and the Future of Work in Arab States

Dated: September 18, 2025

The International Labour Organization (ILO) is set to release a landmark report examining how digitalization and artificial intelligence (AI) are transforming labour markets across the Arab States. The study explores both the challenges and opportunities presented by these technological changes and provides guidance on policies needed to ensure a just and inclusive transition to the digital economy.

Titled Navigating the Digital and Artificial Intelligence Revolution in Arab Labour Markets: Trends, Challenges and Opportunities, the report presents new evidence on the potential effects of digitalization and AI on employment and economic growth in the region. It offers practical policy recommendations for governments, employers, and workers’ organizations to maximize the benefits of technology while protecting vulnerable groups.

The report provides detailed analysis on the proportion of jobs at risk of automation versus those that could be enhanced by generative AI. It examines the impact of digitalization and AI scenarios on employment and GDP, highlighting differences across demographic groups, including women, men, youth, older workers, and other vulnerable populations. The study also identifies sectors and occupations likely to experience the greatest gains or losses in employment.

In addition to these insights, the report outlines a roadmap for policy action, addressing key areas such as digital infrastructure, skills development, social protection, support for small enterprises, legal and regulatory frameworks, and regional cooperation. The English-language report will be launched on Monday, 22 September at 09:00 GMT, accompanied by executive summaries in English and Arabic, as well as a press release.
