The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Ukraine, in collaboration with the Government of the Republic of Korea, has delivered equipment worth US$447,000 (over UAH 18 million) to the State Emergency Service of Ukraine (SES) in Kharkiv Oblast. This support comes in response to heightened risks caused by ongoing shelling and extensive landmine contamination, which threaten both residents and emergency responders in the region. The initiative aims to strengthen the SES’s capacity for faster, safer, and more effective emergency responses.
The equipment package includes a fire-fighting robot, a backhoe loader with additional attachments, drones, training simulators, power saws, and pneumatic lifting cushions. The fire-fighting robot is designed to extinguish fires, transport gear, and monitor hazardous environments, reducing risks to rescuers. Meanwhile, the backhoe loader facilitates rapid rubble removal, enables access to people trapped under debris, and allows for engineering tasks that would otherwise be unsafe or impossible to perform manually.
This delivery is part of a broader effort by UNDP and the Government of Korea to support communities affected by the war. The collaboration focuses on enhancing the technical capacity of emergency services, improving safety for personnel, and laying the groundwork for long-term recovery.
Mr. Park Kichang, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Ukraine, emphasized that such assistance goes beyond emergency aid. He noted that the support addresses urgent needs while contributing to Ukraine’s long-term development. UNDP Resident Representative Auke Lootsma highlighted that equipping emergency responders is central to UNDP’s community security strategy, enabling faster, more effective action and helping to rebuild safe and resilient communities.
