UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper visited Kyiv to reaffirm the United Kingdom’s unwavering support for Ukraine, emphasizing that Ukraine’s security is integral to the security of the UK and Europe. The visit comes amid heightened Russian attacks on civilians and infrastructure, stalled peace talks, and the approach of a difficult winter, underscoring the urgency of continued assistance. Cooper met with President Zelenskyy, Ukrainian ministers, and affected communities to hear first-hand accounts of life under Russia’s aggression and to demonstrate solidarity with the Ukrainian people.
During her visit, the Foreign Secretary announced £142 million in UK aid to support Ukraine’s resilience and humanitarian needs. Of this, £100 million will provide emergency support for frontline communities, including repair of critical water and heating systems, protection for vulnerable civilians, and measures to strengthen livelihoods and jobs. An additional £42 million will fund repairs to electricity transmission networks and safeguard gas and power infrastructure ahead of winter, ensuring continuity of essential services.
Cooper highlighted that the UK’s assistance extends beyond funding, encompassing ongoing military support, the UK-Ukraine 100 Year Partnership, and leadership of the Coalition of the Willing. She emphasized that Russian aggression, including attacks on civilians and stalling of peace talks, poses a long-term security threat not only to Ukraine but to all of Europe and the UK. Through these combined efforts, the UK aims to support Ukraine in achieving a just and lasting peace while maintaining strong bilateral cooperation.
As part of the visit, discussions under the UK-Ukraine Strategic Dialogue included shared priorities on security, reconstruction, and long-term partnership, setting the stage for continued high-level engagement between the UK Prime Minister and President Zelenskyy. The visit underscored the UK’s commitment to standing with Ukraine through the ongoing conflict and beyond.
