Guyana marked World Electric Vehicle Day 2025 by highlighting the rapid growth of its electric mobility sector and its contribution to a modern low carbon future. Over the past five years, the government has increased investment in electric vehicles, charging infrastructure, and skills development, in line with the Low Carbon Development Strategy 2030.
The country now has over 280 electric vehicles on its roads, supported by six public charging stations managed by the Guyana Energy Agency. Fourteen additional stations are expected by the end of 2025. Policy incentives such as zero import duties and favorable tax allowances are encouraging citizens and businesses to adopt cleaner transport options.
A key achievement in 2025 was the launch of the Just Energy Transition Seed Funding Initiative, supported by the Joint SDG Fund, UNDP, and IOM. This programme is installing solar-powered charging stations and training local technicians in electric vehicle maintenance and solar photovoltaic systems. Certification programmes are equipping participants with the expertise to maintain the new technologies and ensure long-term sustainability.
Further training has been provided through the European Union’s Global Gateway strategy and the Euroclima Programme, co-funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development and implemented by GIZ. So far, seventy-seven auto electricians and mechanical technicians have been certified to repair and maintain electric vehicles, building a skilled workforce to support the transition.
To promote awareness and collaboration, Show and Tell exhibitions in Georgetown and Berbice have allowed citizens, auto dealers, and vehicle owners to interact with electric mobility technology. These events showcased the benefits of EVs, including driving range, cost effectiveness, and the growing charging network.
The expansion of Guyana’s electric mobility sector is central to its broader energy transformation, supporting clean energy production and sustainable transport. On World Electric Vehicle Day, Guyana reaffirmed its commitment to pairing infrastructure with workforce development, ensuring that the shift to electric mobility delivers a cleaner, more resilient, and inclusive future.
